A routed closed-cell insert holds its pockets for years, where plucked cubes tear and compress. For a 1400 we normally cut one base layer with pockets and leave the lid foam in place.

Pelican lists the 1400 Protector interior at 11.81" x 8.87" x 5.18", split as a 1.18" lid and a 4.00" base. Pockets up to about 3.5" deep fit in the base layer under the lid foam.

The base is 4.00" deep. With a solid bottom pad, pockets of 3" to 3.5" hold most pistols and camera bodies flush with the rim.
